A new Exhibition Centre is to be constructed on the 1,500sqm site of the former Shanghai Shipyard along the banks of the Huangpu River. Dutch firm OMA, whose design was selected after an international competition, conceived the Exhibition Centre as a “spatial armature,” suspended above a plaza and connected to another exhibition space beneath it.
The structure will incorporate the ramp of a former ship cradle, transforming it into a large-scale theatrical space, while the covered plaza under the elevated box will be used for more “intimate happenings”. Organizing the area along the bank, the building provides much-needed event space for the financial district that can be used for film screenings, fashion shows, and concerts.
The Exhibition Centre will reflect the site’s industrial past, with a metallic mesh exposing its steel structure, resembling the ships that were once constructed here. The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2015.
